In an effort to rescue the survivors, US Service Members fought their way through the city to secure the downed helicopters. The battle raged through the night until US forces were finally evacuated on the morning of October 4th. In the aftermath, 19 US soldiers and airmen were killed in the battle, and 73 were wounded. Two were awarded the Medal of Honor for their heroism during the battle.
