If someone were to ask you when the first submarine was used in combat, what would be your guess? World War II? The Civil War?
Wrong. Our boys have been wrecking s**t below the waves since 1776. Invented by David Bushnell and piloted by Sgt. Ezra Lee of the Continental Army, the Turtle submersible was first used to attack the HMS Eagle in New York Harbor. The attack didn't exactly go as planned, and the Turtle had to retreat and abort the mission. Our boy Ezra and his aquatic endeavor get an 'A' for effort, though, and the Turtle lives on as one of the first examples of American ingenuity in the theater of war.
In Ezra Lee's obituary, it states: "It is not a little remarkable, that this officer is the only man, of which it can be said, that he fought the enemy upon land, upon water, and under the water.'
